Humans are comprised of nearly 30,000 genes, about 400,000 proteins, and more than 40,000 lipids and other small metabolites. Many studies at Monell require knowledge of how those chemicals are regulated in heathy people and perturbed by injury or illness. The Preti Core provides this research support for all Monell researchers and collaborators. The Core is equipped with a state-of-the-art mass spectrometry facility and a preparation laboratory that can accommodate most plant, animal, and human samples. We specialize in the analysis of small molecules, which may include volatiles, lipids, fatty acids, and metabolites.
Please contact the Preti Core Director (see below) for more information.
Non-Volatiles
The Preti Core is equipped with a new, high-resolution tandem mass spectrometer coupled to an ultra-high performance liquid chromatograph. The liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS) instrument is capable of non-volatile analyses in either an untargeted or targeted fashion.
Volatiles
Although less than five percent of metabolites are volatile, their importance in olfaction make them a common target of research. The Preti Core is equipped with three gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) instruments and can employ automated solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and dynamic headspace sampling for targeted and untargeted volatile metabolomics analyses.
